Tucked away in the emerald heartland of Weeraketiya, Naigala Rajamaha Viharaya is one of Southern Sri Lanka’s most tranquil, off-the-beaten-path archaeological gems. 1. History & Sacred Cobra Legends
Dating back to the 3rd Century BC, the monastery was originally established by King Mahanaga of the ancient Ruhuna Kingdom under the name Kala Pabbatha Viharaya ("Black Rock Temple").
Legend tells that during a severe drought, a white cobra appeared to King Mahanaga and guided him up a scorched rock face to a hidden pool of freshwater. Rains broke the drought soon after, and the site earned the local name Naya-Penvu-Gala ("The Rock Shown by the Cobra"), which eventually became Naigala.
During the 12th century, Queen Sugala of Ruhuna is said to have used this isolated rock temple as a refuge to conceal sacred relics from invading forces.
